Report: EA rejects Mirror's Edge 2 pitch

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-02-14-report-ea-rejects-mirrors-edge-2-pitch

From Eurogamer.net  ( Feb 14, 2011 )

Development of Mirror's Edge 2 has been "stopped" by EA

A team at DICE showed EA a prototype that was "declined", according to a Eurogamer Sweden translation of a Press 2 Play TV report

"Patrick [Soderlund - EA driving and shooting game boss] acknowledges that Mirror's Edge didn't match up to their expectations regarding sales, and that has stopped the sequel that has been in development," declared the report, published originally in December.

"EA was shown a prototype, but declined with askance. The project has been stopped - involved parties at DICE are working on something else now. Patrick himself seems to have Mirror's Edge near his heart, but they are not in the business of charity."

Presumably the extra development is going into Battlefield 3 - EA's well publicised attempt at wrestling shooter supremacy from the Call of Duty series.

Patrick Soderlund confirmed last summer that "a small team" at DICE was 'on' a new Mirror's Edge game. Eurogamer pressed him on that point last November.

"Mirror's Edge is an IP that's close to my heart and EA's as well. It was a bold move from us. I'm proud we made it. It obviously didn't reach the commercial success we wanted, even though it wasn't bad at all," he said.

"I still think as a company we're going to talk about it when we're going to talk about it. What I can say is, we haven't buried it. We're absolutely continuing to support Mirror's Edge as an IP. When we're ready to talk about it, we'll talk about it."

EA Games boss Frank Gibeau went on record a few weeks later to say that the execution of Mirror's Edge "fell short". "There were issues with the learning curve, the difficulty, the narrative, and then there was no multiplayer either," he said.

Mirror's Edge, a Parkour-inspired first-person action game, was released late 2009 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Despite an 8/10 recommendation from Eurogamer, the eye-catching title failed to, well, catch punters' eyes - entering the UK all-formats chart at 20.

Eurogamer has requested comment from EA.

Torchlight 2 Release delayed until Summer 2011

From MTV.com  ( Feb 09, 2011 )

Soon, very soon now, Xbox Live Arcade gamers are going to know the joys of Runic Games' "Torchlight," a brazen "Diablo" clone. But is it really a clone if you've got "Diablo" co-designers Max Schaefer and Erich Schaefer leading development? You ponder that while I go cry in a corner. For alas, the coming release of "Torchlight 2" has been pushed back into summer of this year.

The sequel, which was originally slated for a May release, will now make its bow sometime in June or July for Windows and Mac OS X platforms. In terms of features, the coming sequel looks like it will make the original game feel almost like a test run. Co-op play, new player characters, outdoor areas... plus the same tight gameplay that made the first adventure so enjoyable.

Runic CEO Max Schaefer pinned the delay to the difficulties of porting the game's largely mouse-driven controls over for the console experience. "I'd say that the Xbox project, having to do the extra work with the interface, has pushed us back a little bit, so we're probably talking July right now for 'Torchlight 2,'" he told Digital Spy.

Schaefer went on to chalk up the obstacles encountered on the Xbox port as a learning experience, one that the team is using to carry "some optimizations and technical improvements" over to their work on the coming sequel. ""We've got load times down, we've got some animation stuff that's a little bit better, and it's feeling really good right now," he said. "'Torchlight 2' is playing really snappy and really sharp, so I'm very excited about that."

It's Happening: Duke Nukem Forever Officially Locked Down for May 3

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/%5Bprimary-term%5D/its_happening_duke_nukem_forever_officially_locked_down_may_3#/

From MaximumPC Magazine Jan 22, 2011

Even after Gearbox took the reins on Duke Nukem Forever's development and let us – with our own verifiably existent hands – take it for a test drive, it was still pretty darn surreal. And come on: the hulking hero's comeback was given a vague “2011” release window. At that point, DNF may as well have bought itself a big ol' multi-story condo two inches outside of Delay City. Looks like it's time for us to eat crow while Duke chews gum and kicks ass, however, because Gearbox has finally nailed down a release date: May 3, 2011.

“When I said goodbye to 3D Realms and the original Duke Nukem 3D team in 1997 and soon after founded Gearbox Software, I never in my wildest dreams imagined that a day like today would come,” Gearbox president Randy Pitchford told Game Informer. “Today I am proud, humbled and even astounded to announce that the day is coming at last for all gamers to be a part of video game history: Duke Nukem Forever will launch worldwide this May.”

So there you have it. Or rather, you will have it – in only a few short months. And don't forget that a pre-release demo's set to lead the charge, although Gearbox still hasn't given it a concrete date just yet. Regardless, after countless ups and downs, one of gaming's longest rides is nearly at an end. Aw man, now things are feeling all surreal again. At this rate, we'll probably need to beat the game three or four times while pinching and punching ourselves before it sinks in that, yeah, DNF finally, really, irrevocably exist

Angry Gamer Holds 'Runes of Magic' Hostage

Angry Gamer Holds 'Runes of Magic' Hostage

From MaximumPC Magazine ( Jan 18, 2011 )

There's no such reality show called "When Gamers Attack," but if there was to be one, Frogster's Runes of Magic game would take center stage.

Here's the deal. A user who goes by the nick "augustus87" is pretty pissed off with how the German outfit is running its game. Taking matters into his own hands, augustus87 hacked the game's database, posted the details of more than 2,000 accounts on the forum, and threatened to reveal names and passwords of 1,000 Runes of Magic players every day until his demands are met, GameSpy reports. Those demands?

No more closing or deleting threads, better treatment of Frogster employees worldwide, more transparency with customers, secure game clients against cheating and modding, protect personal info, and "stop spying on your employees."

"At Frogster we are constantly analyzing all IT and security-related systems with the goal of improving them continuously," Frogster's Axel Schmidt told Edge Magazine. "We have increased these efforts even more over the last week. Immediately after we noticed the attack, all systems were double-checked and secured by new firewalls, configured with new user permits and passwords and several other protection measures right away."

According to Frogster, the disgruntled hacker got his hands on "outdated log-in data from 2007," so there isn't a whole to worry abuot. Nevertheless, Frogster deemed the attack a "serious criminal offense" and is working with German law enforcement.

Black Ops guns its way to US$ 1BILLION sales record

Black Ops News #2

From The New York Post ( Dec 21, 2010 )

The entertainment industry has a new billion-dollar baby

Activision Blizzard announced yesterday its "Call of Duty: Black Ops" video game has racked up $1 billion in sales after just 42 days on the market.

That's quicker than the company's previous blockbuster video game, "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2," which passed the 10-figure plateau in 64 days.

"In all of entertainment, only 'Call of Duty' and 'Avatar' have ever achieved the billion-dollar revenue milestone this quickly," Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said.

"Avatar" -- the 3-D blockbuster produced by 20th Century Fox, which, like The Post is owned by News Corp. -- wears the crown as the fastest entertainment property to ring up $1 billion in sales, having done so last year after just 20 days in wide release.

Demand for "Black Ops," the seventh release of the "Call of Duty" franchise, has proved more resilient than some Wall Street analysts expected, and puts the game in the running to become among the biggest entertainment releases in history, whether in movies, books or video games.

The milestone follows last month's announcement that "Black Ops" -- which retails for $59.99 -- had generated an unprecedented $360 million in revenue on its first day of release, and $650 million during its first five days, shattering records set by previous media titles.

"More people play 'Black Ops' every day than watch late-night hosts Jay Leno, David Letterman and Jimmy Fallon combined," Kotick boasted in an interview with The Post.

Since the release of 'Black Ops,' users have logged more than 600 million hours of online playing time -- or about 68,500 years. If parents are worried, Kotick argues that 'Black Ops,' which allows users to play in groups online, is a kind of "social networking tool."

As such, Kotick argues that Activision's business model is closer to Facebook's or Google's than that of a traditional video-game manufacturer.

Shares of Santa Monica-based Activision Blizzard, which have risen 10 percent year to date, gained 2 cents to $12.24 yesterday.
